Tall Ships In Gdynia 2003 |
|
On 19-22 July 2003 Gdynia hosted The Tall Ships’ Races for the third time. The event turned out to be a promotional success of the city, attracting a record number of vessels and spectators. Over a million visitors came to Gdynia to see the ships, but also to attend hundreds of events: the sea fair, concerts, exhibitions, balloon flights, a parade of vintage cars, and many others. Eighty-seven vessels, including 12 biggest Class-A ships like Russian Sedov and Kruzenshtern, Mexican Cuathtemoc and Dar Młodzieży took part in the race from Gdynia to Turku (Finland), Riga (Latvia) and Travemunde (Germany). This was the last time when the races were held under the name "Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Races": the producer of Cutty Sark whisky (the one bearing the picture of the famous clipper on the label) withdrew from sponsorship after there were some problems with the so-called anti-alcohol police.
