Questions and Answers

Q: What is Sail Training?
A: Sail training is an adventure activity and while it includes instruction in all aspects of sailing, its purpose goes far beyond this. Participants are required to confront many demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and personal responsibility. It promotes an acceptance of others whatever their social or cultural backgrounds, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks. Those who undertake sail training on Tall Ships generally find it a positive life-changing experience.

Q: What is Sail Training International?
A: Sail Training International is a charity which works closely with the world's sail training Tall Ships, national sail training organisations and host ports, to help young people benefit from the sail training experience. It is the world's leading provider of races & events, conferences & seminars, publications, research and other services for the international sail training community.

Q: Why was The Culture 2011 Tall Ships Regatta established?
A:   Sail Training International has organised a specjal Regatta in 2011 to mark the Finnish city of Turku's year as the European Capital of Culture. The Culture 2011 Tall Ships Regatta is following on from The Tall Ships Races 2011 extending the Tall Ships festival season into September.
- Klaipeda, Lithuania - Thursday 18 - Sunday August
- Race One
Turku, Finland - Friday 26 - Sunday 28 August
- Race Two
Gdynia, Poland - Friday 2 - Monday 5 September

Q: Where can I find out race results?
A: Visit www.sailtraininginternational.org for real-time tracking of Tall Ships in addition to race results. Regular race reports will be provided online in addition to photos throughout the Regatta.

Q: What is The Tall Ships Races?
A: The Tall Ships Races, presented by Szczecin, is the biggest single event organised by Sail Training International in European waters and is the largest mass participation sail training event for young people in Europe. The Race Series started in Waterford, Ireland on Thursday 30th June and finished in Halmstad, Sweden on Monday 8th August (via the following host ports: Greenock, Scotland; Lerwick, Shetland; Stavanger, Norway; Halmstad, Sweden).

Q: How are the host ports decided for The Tall Ships Races?
A: The Tall Ships Races are planned four years in advance with the route carefully selected to enable visits to different sea areas around Europe, from the Baltic to the Iberian Peninsula. Once Sail Training International has selected the sea area, all the relevant ports in that region are invited to bid to become a host port.

Q: What are the benefits of becoming a host port?
A: There are many economic, social and community-oriented reasons why a port may bid to become a Host Port for The Tall Ships Races. Traditionally, huge crowds (from many hundreds of thousands to well over a million) visit a port during the four days of the event, bringing welcome income to the port, city and local businesses, plenty of  national and international media attention, and a range of opportunities for community involvement and enjoyment.
